My favorite takeaway is if you're snacking, you need to sit. I am the master of multi-tasking but I need to reign that in and focus in on one task a time. I had to comment on the latest gaffe by Elizabeth (I should be sitting at the kid's table) Hasselbeck. This week on The View. Yes, I watch it but don't know why. Instead of Celebrity Rehab, MTV should have a reality show - "The View Rehab" but I digress.

This week she made one of her wackier comments and there are so many. In discussing why some older women get involved in same sex relationships, her assertion is that it's because older women can't find a man.

"All older men are going for younger women, leaving the women with no one." according to Hasselbeck. And her response to Joy Behar when Behar said her comment was "ridiculous." Older women are looking for companionship not a sexual relationship.

Oh Bitsy. What planet are you on and who feeds you this stuff?

So according to her, I, an "older" women should just give it up and find a lesbian or another woman to hang with instead of a man.

There is one fatal flaw in her twisted logic.

" I am not, never or will be attracted to women." And I am sure, every woman who fit's her definition who is now single doesn't either.

What exactly did you and that famous lesbian Melissa Etheridge talk about when she was at her house???

Thoughts from the single 40 plus crowd are welcome.

And for the record, I do have hope I will find a guy one day although as my friends, I need to do some work to find him, he is not going to be knocking on my door.

Pearl S. Buck Foundation - Saving Lives Everyday - Event Hosted by NYC Single Mom and Mommy Factor

This week Onica (http://mommyfactor.blogspot.com/) and I hosted an event highlighting the Pearl S. Buck International Foundation. The event was part of Johnson's "Girl Talk Cause Party," Johnson's committment to raise awareness about worthwhile causes, in connection with B-Link Network.

I was excited that Onica asked if I wanted to co-host the event given that I adopted my daughter and because I am supportive of all the amazing work that The Pearl S. Buck foundation is doing to help kids to live a better life.

Amina from mixedchild.com was our guest speaker and provided a start to a great discussion on what it means to grow up bi-racial in the Phillipines and Brooklyn. Interesting, right?

Being bi-racial in today's age is no big deal, even the President is bi-racial. And speaking personally, as a bi-racial person, my mom was Japanese and my father was African-American, I think often about lucky I am to be an American.

Unfortunately, bi-racial children in other countries especially Asia are not so lucky. The Pearl S. Buck foundation works to try to make a better life for these kids who are denied the basic rights; right to an education, healthcare and most of allm, acceptance that we all take for granted. These children pay the price for their parents.

If all you do is pass the word onto your readers and friends/family about the Pearl S. Buck foundation, my work is done.

Last Friday was visiting day at camp. It was a wonderful day to head out to Staten Island and see my daughter and her friends at play.

Adoption Tale - No, My Daughter is Not From Ethiopia

I am re- running this post because I recently saw Alec Mapa on the View last week. You probably recognize him from his Ugly Betty role as the gossip reporter.

Two funny hilarious points he made. He talked about his husband and 5-year-old foster /adopted son. “My husband’s white, I’m Asian, and my son is black. We look like the last two minutes of It’s a Small World" and where is your son is from, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, no, he's from Compton."

And I agree. Maybe it's Angelina and Brad adopting children from Cambodia, Vietnam Ethiopia, or Madonna's adopting from Malawi or the vast number of little Chinese girls and their white parents dotting (who am I kidding, it's more like over running) the upper east side that people are somewhat taken aback that I adopted from that international hot spot, Philadelphia.

When I tell people that I adopted my daughter, they invariably ask "where did you adopt her from?"
I, of course, say," Philadelphia." Then comes the rather quizzical momentary stare and you can see it there eyes, "that can't be" and they always respond " really" or "oh", like this is unheard of phenemonon. Adopting domestically. Who does that?

I guess they think that I am going to say say Haiti or Ethipia, I am not sure what they think.
And for the record, it's isn't just white people but black folks who get that look, too.

I just don't know what to make of this reaction. As the non-confrontational person that I am, I just move the conversation along.
Any thoughts???

Chatting with Kathie Lee Gifford

Last week, I mentioned that I went to an event hosted by Hayneedle.com, an online furnishings retailer in celebration of National Hammocks Day and to announce the nationwide campaign of Childhelp.org, a national organization dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and neglect.

After learning about the organziation, I had the pleasure of interviewing Kathie Lee Gifford,

I attended the event with gaynycdad.com so they asked if we would do the interview in tandem. I did not care so we waited with the other writers. After about 10 minutes, we were whisked away to the interview room.

Kathie Lee was gracious in introducing herself to Mitch and me. Before we started the interview, she asked us if we wanted a drink.

"Are you drinking?" Yes, I having a champagne. I could not resist having a drink with Kathie Lee, how fun is that to say, "I had champagne with Kathie Lee Gifford."

Q: How long have you been working with Childhelp.org?
A: "I have working with them for close to 20 years, trying to make a difference the best way I can. Did you know that every 10 seconds, there is a report of child abuse? That is a startling statistic."

Q: What is a parenting tip you can give parents?
A: "Structure is the key to parenting. Children need to have structure in their daily lives"

Q: How many hammocks do you have? This question came from gaynycdad.com
A: Three, one in all of our houses.

At that point, we talked about a wide range of subjects from parents needing to decompress from all the gadgets, cellphones, technology and yes, it might be a seque but swinging in a hammock is a great way to relax and reduce stress. "In these economic times, parents are under so much stress that relaxing is a way to reduce neglect and child abuse."

All in all, we had a great conversation. My only regret is that I did not tape the conversation. She was so nice and great conversationalist, she made it to easy to talk to and it was hard to write what I did, I was too busy talking to her. I must admit, I had a great time.

And I am sure you are curious, and I would be remiss to mention. She looked great.

At the end, she asked her assistant to send us her book, Party Animals. It came today and it was addressed to my daughter. That was truly nice and shows a lot of class in my book.

Mommy, You Are so Disorganized

When my daughter was an infant/toddler, I was your typical Type-A mom. I had multiple bags neatly filled with wipes, Kleenex, Neosporin and band-aids, just so I would not run out and be left hanging if some boo-boo popped up. And I used to fill in supplies every two weeks, that's how anal-retentive I was.

Now that my daughter is seven, my helicopter mom days are over and I have retired to the benches, reading my paper, checking emails and talking to the other moms, all those activities I used to look on with envy in the early years. Don't worry, I would look up every few minutes just to make sure my daughter was doing okay, but I certainly did not run after her the way I used to.

So when my helicopter mom days ended, I stopped carrying my first-aid bags around and winged it.

Recently, I went to the playground with my daughter, where all the usual running, jumping, laughing type of activities ensued, basically, a lazy afternoon. About 20 minutes into our lazy afternoon, my daughter ran up to me crying that she had fallen and scratched her knee. As we all know, it doesn't matter if it's the least little nick, kids act like they were in a major accident. Of course, I could barely see the scratch and only saw the smallest little speck of blood.

"Mommy, don't you have a band-aid?" she asked while crying. Knowing full well I did not have a band- aid, I feigned rummaging through my bag. "Sorry, I don't have one", giving her my best sad face (I missed my calling as a bad actress.)

"That's okay, I will go ask Sean's mom for one," and off she skedadled. Of course, Sean's mom had a band-aid. I chalked it up to a bad mommy moment and a forgot about it.

A few days later on a playdate with her BFF, my daughter again fell and asked again for a band-aid. I didn't even bother searching in my bag and gave her the sorry, I don't have one look and she announces loudly, "Mommy, you are so disorganized, you never have anything when I get hurt." The other mom sort of gives me the you don't have a band-aid look and pulls one out. I sheepishly mustered a thanks and again forgot about it.

Over the course of the next couple of weeks, little incidents kept happening, spilled ice cream, runny nose, insect bites and I, of course, was completely unprepared.

So bringing my head out of the sand, I acquiesced and started pulling together my first aid kits again because summer is here and it's a matter of time before a nick is not a nick and turns out to be gusher of scratch and I just can't be unprepared.

More importantly, I really don't want my daughter to grow up thinking her mother was disorganized and unprepared when she was a child. I liked her to hang on to the illusion that her mom was supermommy until the dreaded teen years where I transform into evil mommy.

New York City is a Small Town

The borough of Manhattan has 1.5 million people living in it. Scary, isn't it? But on any given day, if you are a parent, you are bound to run into another parent over the course of the week and that excludes camp and school.

This past week, I ran into a pre-school mom friend at the supermarket. During the summer, I never see them since they are out at their summer house so that was a pleasant surprise. Our daughter's have been BFF's since pre-school and have been taking ballet every week for 3 years. She and her husband (a great and funny guy) are both amazingly down-to-earth, funny and just fun to be around.

And yesterday, coming back from a birthday party, I ran into a single mom friend who I have been trying to arrange a playdate with for weeks. We ended having a mini-playdate and dinner. If I had tried to arrange this, it would have never happened. We had fun, the kids had fun and I got to enjoy a non-pizza related meal (2 ginger mojitos and drunken noodles for me, yeah.)

So here's to living in small town New York City.

Therapy Thursday - Journaling and Summer Routine

Now that it's summer, it seemed like the perfect time to tweak my daughter's the rules and rewards chart.

So instead of homework on her chart, we replaced it with either 20 minutes of reading, journaling (aka feelings journal) or working in her math workbook. Just like during the school year, doing her "work" is takes place right when we get home from camp while I am getting dinner ready.

Why have I chosen this path? Two reasons. 1) Studies show that without any type of mental stimulation during the summer, children experience what is wonderfully termed "brain drain." Children basically, backslide and lose much of what they learned in the previous school year and 2) we both stay on schedule.

And why add the feelings journal? As everyone knows kids have temper tantrums, my daughter included. The feelings journal was recommended by my therapist as a way for my daughter to express her feelings an on-going basis. The therapist gave me a feelings chart so my daughter could use as a guide.

To make it special, I went and bought a fancy journal for her to write in and communicated that she should also draw pictures to go with her feelings. She actually likes writing in her feelings journal

And from my perspective, it makes her practice her writing and spelling skills. Sneaky, right.

As someone who continues to debate the private vs. public school choice, shinybrite provides more insight into the differences between public and private school. Definitely worth a look as it adds more information on the discussion.

I am Happier Since Becoming a Mom - So there New York Magazine

Last week, New York magazine ran an article, "All Joy and No Fun - Why Parents Hate Parenting", which has been tearing up the blogosphere and getting lots of buzz on CNN and NPR, etc. The article makes the case that having children doesn't make people happier.

Here some quotes from the article.
"Most people assume that having children will make them happier. Yet a wide variety of academic research shows that parents are not happier than their childless peers. I don't agree no matter what the data says.
"Mothers are less happy than fathers and single parents are less happy still." I don't agree.
"Children bring unrivaled moments of joy but also unrivaled moments of frustration, tedium anxiety, heartbreak." I agree.
"Studies have found that parent's dissatisfaction only grew the more money they had, even though they could buy more child care." So don't agree.

So here is my response to Jennifer Senior's article:

Am I happy that I adopted my daughter? Yes, of course I am.

Am I happy all the time? No, but I wouldn't I say I was unhappy. What I would say is that, sometimes I am tired, worried about on my financial future, worried about my daughter's education, wonder if she is overscheduled and the big question, am I good parent.

Of course, if I had a personal assistant to help with all the chores, make appointments, pick her up from school, watch my daughter when I am sick or when I needed a break, I might be a little less everything so the notion that if I had more money is bulls**t.

I will admit, over the last few years, I have had a good cry because I am so overwhelmed. I think it's more from the lack of support from my family not my friends. I know they don't do it intentionally because they have their own issues but...

Luckily I have friends who offer to take my daughter to church, or the park when I need some mommy time.

The Upside to having a child - New Friends - I don't know about you but after a certain point, you stop meeting new people especially in New York. It's just get exhausting and tedious trying to make friends.

Because of my daughter, I met people who I would have never crossed paths with if I did not have her. Sure, our initial and continuing bond are our children but true friendships has definitely evolved.

Am I jealous of my single friends? Occasionally. Sure, I would like to go to dinner on the spur of the moment and not be disappointed when I can't find a babysitter (damn, those girls with lives and plans.) Sure, I would like to go on trips. Sure, I miss opening weekend of a movie or being able to get a mani/pedi when I want but it usually passes.

Even if I was still single and carefree, my life would not be perfect, either. I think we all learned ago, life is not perfect. You can choose to be happy or sad or complain or blame your parents, they system or whatever. Life is about choices. I maybe naive, but I choose to be happy and positive with a litte anger and a good cry thrown in for good measure every so often

I love my daughter and when she makes me laugh with her nutty skits or her role playing being "in the business" or learns to ride a bike on her own or boldly introduces herself to kid on the playground or has full scale conversation with one of her aunts, I am so happy and proud. Those moments happen more often than the frustrating ones.

Of course, check back in a few years during the tween/teen years, I am pretty sure, then I will unhappy.

I don't want to be the Mayor of Foursquare

Last Dave Pogue of the New York Times wrote an article, For Those Facebook Left Behind providing a quick primer social networking sites/apps. One of the sites, he mentioned was Foursquare which has come out of the gate and has become one of the hottest social networking sites out on the market.

I have no idea why I embraced Foursquare. Maybe because I am a blogger and must be on top of all the social networking sites.

Foursquare is an app you open up on your phone which uses the internal GPS so that you can see restaurants, shops, museums, etc where you are standing. The purpose is to "check-in" so your friends know where you are.

The person who checks in the most becomes that place's " mayor."

What's funny about this app is the line "so your friends" know where you are. It's laughable because NONE of IRL friends have this app. Some of my friends don't even have a smartphone and even have phones that are 3-4 years old. And I am pretty sure that when they upgrade to a new phone that they will not get this app.

So why do I do it? Who the hell knows? Maybe secretly, I think I am going to meet new friends. So far, I have 46 friends which some are blogger friends but most are strangers. Weird, huh.

In tribute to Kate being on The View last week, I thought I would offer last year's post after her "world" started unraveling.

As you can see, I was wrong about the show going away but I still ask where's my reality show TLC?

For months, like most of America, I have been riveted to the train wreck that is Jon and Kate Gosselin. I was an early fan of the show and unlike the majority of people, am a Kate fan. I always knew she would prevail as she has a better public relation's team than Jon and is smart enough to stay out of the public eye. And no, having TMZ follow you to Target does not count.

I had no idea how this melodrama would play out but it never occurred to me that TLC would get rid of Jon and re-title the show "Kate plus eight." What irks me is that TLC is going to pass Kate off as this single mom raising her eight kids alone. She is not raising those kids alone. I am a single mom who adopted her daughter when she was just 12 days old, on my own. Where is my show?

I don't have a stylist, housekeepers, nannies, a bodyguard and cadre of camera man following me around helping me raise my daughter. Yes, raising eight kids is a challenge but seriously, I am not getting $75,000 an episode and live in a million dollar ($1.5million to be exact) house like Kate. She is hardly this struggling single mom. It is an insult to single moms everywhere trying to keep it together with no help to put her in the same boat.

I used to love the show but since the season opener when Jon and Kate announced their impending divorce to the tune of 10 million viewers, I have not watched it. The show has veered completely off course and become one big product placement. It is so pathetically staged that it is no longer worth watching, cute kids or not. I just don't care if Kate puts up a tent for a backyard camping expedition. Seriously, did we really believe she put that tent up herself? No, we did not! TLC should just pay out her contract and move on. This show is on its last legs.

Happy 4th of July and a American Flag Recipe

Happy 4th of July. I hope that you enjoy the day with family and friends. We are headed out of town for the day to visit a friend. Thank goodness she has a pool because given that it's going to hit close to 100 degrees today and it will keep my daughter occupied since they don't have kids.

And because you can't show up emptyhande, my daughter and I made this fun 4th of July cake. Yes, we baked. And to quote my favorite reality show mom, Kate, having kids is all about creating traditions. So this is one.

Final note- since we all seem to forget the history and origin of why we have the day off, I will leave with you a few fun facts about July 4th:

American Flag Cake Recipe
Ingredients*
Trader Joe's Vanilla & Baking Mix
1/2 Pint Whipping Cream
1/4 pint blueberries, rinsed and drained
1/2 cup strawberries, rinsed and drained

Direction:
Prepare cake mix according to directions. Our cake called for 8 x 8 x 2 pan but to make a rectangle size cake use 9 x 13 pan.
Cool cake completely
Frost cake with whipped cream
Place blueberries in the top left corner of the pan.
Arrange sliced strawberries as stripes to make the flag.
Chill until serving.
Serves 6

Substitutions:
Cake Mix - Use any packaged yellow cake mix for Trader Joe's Vanilla cake mix.
Whip Cream - use any whipped topping or low cal topping to reduce fat and calorie content
Add more fruit to cover 9 x 13 pan

Keeping Up with Early Tech Adopters

This month is my daughter's seventh birthday. For the last year and a half, she has been begging for a Nintendo DS. And why is that? Because literally, everyone in her peer group has one, so she, of course has to have one. Personally, I don't have an issue with having any of the latest gadgets, good god, I would love nothing better than to have all the latest gaming systems in my home so I could play with them.

My issue is that it's one more thing that I have to negotiate with my daughter - playing time as a reward for good behavior or a taking it away as consequence for not so great behavior. It's all so exhausting, right.

So to stave off buying a DS as long as I could, I told my daughter that she could get one for her seventh birthday if she saved up her allowance. A couple of months ago, she decided to count her allowance money and was disappointed that she wasn't even close to her goal. Over the next few weeks leading up to her birthday, she would say in her little voice, almost in tears, "I wonder what I am going to get for my birthday since I don't have enough money to buy the DS."

Knowing she wasn't even close to having enough money, I could have easily decided not to buy the DS and I am sure she would have accepted it but I just could not disappoint her so I bought the darn thing. I just couldn't bear to see her sad little face on her birthday. More importantly, I had no back up gift.

To say that she was thrilled to receive the DS is an understatement. As I was relieved that we had finally reached the technological mountain top, I realized that some of her classmates are now getting the iPod touch for their birthdays.

And so with that, my daughter and I will have to accept that we will never be early adopters of technology and call it day.

Update to this post. Last weekend, my daughter lost her DS and all her games. Oh well.

Wordless Wednesday - Hanging with my Godmother

Last weekend, a group of us went to dinner at Buon Gusto on the upper east side. I go back and forth between going it alone or bringing my daughter since it ends up way past her bedtime. I decided to bring her along and she was fabulous, behaviour wise, eating her dinner wise and plain entertaining wise. I think is smart enough to figure out that if she whines or misbehaves, she has to stay at home.

Makeover Intervention Needed NOW

After I was laid off last year and given the rather sad job market, I decided to start a blog to enhance my social media skills which was a gap on my resume. Who knew, I would end up enjoying writing about my crazy life raising my daughter as a single mom in New York City, or best of all, get invited to cool events where I met other great mom (and dad) bloggers while I job searched.

Of course, looking on the positive side to being unemployed, I was able to spend more time with my daughter. I love being able to drop her off at school without having to rush off to work and not having to juggle the gazillion babysitters for pick up so I could work late. And of course, I now have the time to work on getting healthier by going to the gym.

The flip side to all this is that writing and job searching is a solitary experience. Since I am not married or have a significant person in my life, it's just my daughter and me. And because I don't have to go to the office in business attire, my wardrobe consists of sweat pants, a white t-shirt, sneakers and no make-up, not even lipstick.

Occasionally, over the past year, I have had in-person interviews which forces me to "dress up" but honestly, I always feel underdressed or not quite put together. I have been out of the game too long and have no idea how to dress anymore? How is that possible after only 9 months? I am so ecstatic when the initial interview is a phone interview just so I don't have to deal with getting out of my sweat pants attire.

This is New York City, fashion capital, I am surrounded by fashionable people all day, every day. You would think that would mentally force me to attempt to look cute on a daily basis. Every so often, I will try to put on make up and wear cute clothes for pick up or just running errands but that little effort lasts a about a day. Being pretty takes work.

Then, I started getting invited to blog events. I thought that would snap me out of my fashion funk. I treated the blog events like work events, wore business casual and actually put on make up. I was actually excited to put in the effort. But I realized that most of the bloggers who attend these events, just wear jeans so I started wearing jeans. I did not even bother to wear cute shoes, just comfortable ones. And trust me, I have cute shoes.

Then last week, I reached a new low. I actually went straight from the gym to my hair appointment in my sweaty, stinky gym clothes. I did not even make the effort to bring a change of clothes to the gym so I could shower and change. At the end of the day, I thought to myself, I seriously need a makeover or a new job to get me out of my clothes funk.

I would love to hear from other work at home moms. How do you keep your appearance from heading down the tubes? I need an makeover intervention, NOW!

Yesterday, there was a story in the New York Times about Kiki Shaffer, the director of the 14th Street Y's Parenting, Family and Early Childhood Center.

I am so happy that Kiki is getting recognition because her mommy and me class was such a godsend to me when I first adopted my daughter.

After I came home from the adoption agency, I spent a few days with my family and then came back to New York with my daughter. My sister came along to help out for a few days but for 2 1/2 months it was all me, all day, every day.

While I was lucky enough to have the time off to bond with my little baby girl, it was a pretty isolating experience. Yes, people came over but that leaves the other 22 hours to take care of an infant by myself.

Finding the mommy and me class at the 14th Street Y literally saved my sanity only because it forced me to leave the house and interact with other mothers who had just had a baby.

And years later, she supported having a single moms support group hold our meetings at the Y. That single moms group led to meeting single mom who have I bonded with and am still friends today.

I am glad the Times found her and profiled her because, so often most of the stories are master of the universe stories or some young goofball becoming an internet billionaire (and no, I don't begrudge either group), but anyone who helps mothers and families never seems to get their due.

In the end, Kiki's work helps more families than Facebook or Twitter.

Birthday Party Surprise

Over the years, my friends and I have been taking each other out to celebrate our respective birthdays. This year, my choice was Jeans-George on Central Park West (last year my choice was Picholine.) Given the economic times, instead of dinner, we decided that we do lunch as it would be a little less costly than going to dinner.

I thoroughly enjoy these lunch/dinners with my friends as it allows me, much needed mommy time and adult conversation. The problem is now that my daughter has gotten older, she wants to come along to celebrate my birthday. I try to explain that mommy needs to go out with her friends but this line of reasoning somehow "offends" her.

So this year, she asked if she could throw me a "surprise birthday" party and have all my friends come over to celebrate my birthday.

How can you say no to a request like that? So I arranged for the babysitter to bake my birthday cake (Thank You Duncan Hines) and take her to Party City to buy decorations.

Well, what a surprise, it was more than I could ever hope for. As we entered the apartment, there were tons of balloons at the entrance, a birthday sign and of course, my birthday cake with a gazillion candles. I, even received a gift, a silver bracelet. Even though, we had dessert at the restaurant, we happily at her cake after we sang Happy Birthday. And even though we went to fancy restaurant with a fancy pastry chef, there is nothing tastier and more delicious when a cake is baked with love and affection.

It was the best birthday ever, I can't wait until next year.

Helpful Tips if Your Thinking About Adopting

A couple of weeks ago, I went out to drinks with friends and she introduced to one of her single friends who is thinking about adopting on her own. Of course, I had a lot of advice and I thought whether you are single or a couple, the application process is the same and I would impart tips that I had when I was going through the process.

Although I went through the adoption process in 2001, not much has changed with regards to the application requirements. From agency to agency, there may be a little variation but for the most part they all want certain information and documents.

So even if you are just in the preliminary phase of just thinking about adoption, here is food for thought about what else you should be doing as you explore agencies and talk to other adoptive parents.

Tip #1: Work with more than one agency if you want to adopt domestically, in fact use as many as you can afford. I used six agencies and why? Unlike the olden days (the 50's, 60's and 70's), there is not a stigma to keeping your baby if you are unmarried which means that are not as many babies being given up for domestic adoption. The end result is that there are more families than babies to adopt. For international adoption, you can work with one agency.

Tip #2 - Start gathering documents for your application
In case you are unaware, the adoption application is pretty comprehensive and while it may not seem like a lot, pulling it all together takes time so why not just start now.

Tax returns - Every agency is different but some agencies require the past 2 years tax returns, some require only 1 year. Make lots of copies especially if you are applying to several agencies, just to have them.
Financial Statement or budget - Basically, this document details income, household monthly expenses, credit card balances, savings, investments, life insurance, rent or mortgage expense, etc. Put together an excel spreadsheet so you can use as a reference.
Draft a Dear Birth Mother letter - a long and short version - This took me weeks to do. Remember, this may be the most important letter you ever write since it may be the deciding factor that a single mother chooses you over another family. No pressure, right.
Gather photos of family, extended family, friends, your home, the babies room (this depends on the agency, I did not have to do this) to include in your photo album or book, again this varies by agency.
Your photo
Reference letters - Think about who you want to submit reference letters, you will need 3-5 references depending on the agency. Make it life easy for the person and draft bullet points for them so it's easier for them to complete. Allow enough time for them to complete this task and forward to the agency. One person I asked took forever and held up the process but I had a back up person to complete the application.
Marriage license, divorce decree, where applicable
Birth certificate
Find out your company's policy regarding adding adopted child to be covered.
Think about who will be the guardian in the event something happens to you.

Tip #3 - Check your company's policy on adoption. From family leave policy to if there is a possibility that the company will provide financial help.

Tip #4: Save, Save, Save - That is not much else to add there.

Other documents that will be needed but can't really be completed as every agency request or form will be different but I just wanted you to be aware of documents that will be needed to complete the application.

Employment verification
Medical report to be completed by your doctor, AIDs/HIV is one test most people have never taken but it is required for adoption application.
Home study
Fingerprinting

Therapy Thursday - One Task At A Time

Months ago, I developed a Rewards and Consequences chart that detailed all the tasks that my daughter was to complete and the rewards and consequences that would happen if she completed or did not complete a task.

My daughter knows all the tasks she must do in the morning but still must be reminded. After weeks of repeating "did you brush your teeth? clear the table, put your shoes on," all in succession, the lightbulb finally went off that my daughter can not be told to do more than one task at a time.

How did I come to this realization, she told me. "I can only do one thing at time, I am brushing my teeth. I can't put my shoes on and brush my teeth at the same time," she yelled from the bathroom one morning. Duh, really!!!

So now I only ask her to do one task at a time. Does she do it? Eventually. Now I just have to stop reminding her ten times to do the one task.

Patience is not a virtue, it's Sisyphus condemned to forever pushing the boulder up the mountain only to have it roll down the mountain. It never ends.

And kids seem to have that selective hearing trait where they only hear the fun stuff; "let's go the park, do you want some ice cream?" but never seem hear the mundane like "clean up your room, brush your teeth, turn off the iPhone."

Practical Advice from Model Veronica Webb

Last week, I had the pleasure of conducting my first celebrity interview with International Model and Television Personality Veronica Webb at the Skinny Cow event. As she mentioned, she has been modeling for twenty five years which means I have been a fan for that long. Yikes! Let me say for the record and not to superficial but you know want to ask, she looked fabulous, her skin was flawless and skinny but not too skinny. She is just as perfect in person as in her photos.

I must admit I was a tad nervous but she couldn't have been nicer and patient with my questions. She even styled me at the end. Of course, I couldn't help but volunteer for a makeover if she ever need a single mom to make over. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

1. How did you become involved with Skinny Cow?
a. I have been talking about nutrition for years and I have been eating Skinny Cow since the 90's, mostly the ice cream sandwiches. I think it's quality product made with skim milk and has low fat content. Perfect.

2. As a mom, how do you juggle home and work?

a. You don't have a choice but everything is a tradeoff. I also try to integrate an exercise routine that requires no appointments and no equipment. I run while my kids scooter.

She was quite clear that she has the same struggles as all working moms - how provide for her children (she has two girls) and be there for them at the same time. Her job is too look good for work. While she has to go for mani/pedis, she would prefer to be hanging with her girls.

3. From a single mom's perspective doing it on my own, I am always trying to get my daughter to try new foods, do you have any tips on getting her to try new foods?
I signed my daughters up for cooking school at an early age. I get them involved with cooking the meal so they can take pride and ownership in their cooking and they are more likely to eat what they cook. Another tip is instead of watching cartoons, turn on the Food Network. They are memorized by the weird stuff the chefs are cooking.

I Hate Google Today or Larry Page Can't Decide Which One

Every blogger, website has site has a page rank. Bloggers are either obsessed about their page rank or they don't care about. Of course, the ones who say they don't care are lying.

I am no different. When my page rank hit 3, I said a little hurray for myself and went so far as to put the little widget on my site for all the world to see. When it hit 4, goodness, I was excited.

Then this weekend, I noticed that my widget said 0, I couldn't believe it. I went to the site and entered in my url and yes indeed it was 0. Why??? I can only conjecture that because I changed my url from www.newyorkcitysinglemom.com to http://www.nycsinglemom.com that all my previous links have been dropped or got screwed up.

To say that I am upset is an understatement. I worked hard for that page rank and now I have to spend the next few months bringing it back.

P.S. Page Rank is named after Larry Page, one of the co-founders of google.

Fantastic Four Friday - 4 Tips to Keep Children Busy During Road Trips (MobiStories Digital Book 50% Off Promotion)

On road trips, traveling with children is never easy trying to keep them entertained, having meltdowns, asking you a hundred times, "when are we going to be there?" and constantly repeating, "I'm bored."

Here are my Fantastic Four Tips to keep your kids busy during road trips or even on the subway.

1. Portable DVD Player - Families with cars can now have DVDs as an option (isn't life grand?) but hey we can't all have new cars. Bring along a DVD player for long trips. If you have an older model, there are accessories that attach to the back of the front seat so the kids don't have to hold in their lap. This has been a lifesaver on long flights even when we fly on an airline like Jet Blue which has kids channels. Even my daughter gets bored watching cartoons.

2. Nitendo DS or Leapfrog - When my daughter was younger, the Leapfrog was a sanity saver for me and now that she is older, the Nitendo DS is now the life saver. If you travel a lot, it's a nice surprise if you buy a new cartridge for the trip that way they have a new game which is sure to keep them even more occupied than usual.

3. Games, Books, Sketch Pads, Coloring Books - We have a whole host of games, books and sketchpads that I bring along. Since my daughter is a great reader and speller, Mad Libs has been a fun game to add to our tool kit of tricks. Also she is now into reading Junie B so we bring that along plus her sketchpad.

4. MobiStories Digital Books for Kids - I discovered MobiStories at a recent Silicon Valley Moms Blog event and so happy that I did. I am always looking for books to download on my iPhone and haven't found any worth paying for until now. What I love about the stories is the interactivity of the stories. It really engages your child. Plus the prices of each story are extremely affordable. There is even a bio of President Obama and the First Lady for purchase. Weekend Wrap Up - Dance Recital to Celebrity Interview

So it's Wednesday and I am barely recovering from the weekend of non-stop events. Saturday was my daughter's annual dance recital (sorry, no photos), she was cute and very good (brag much.) Prima ballerina, probably not but she still loves going to dance class every week, so we will stick with it and until I hear, "I hate it."

Her posture and focus on stage has so greatly improved from where we started three years ago which of course, was my original goal of signing her up for ballet class.

The day of the recital is such a long day. She had to be all the way uptown and for those of you who don't live in Manhattan, it takes about an hour door to door to get from downtown up past Harlem. We had to be there at 10 and the recital started at 4. I have no idea why???

My friend was out of town so I was able to hang out at her apartment on the upper east side so I did not have to go all the way home. What a mini-vacation! I did not know hanging out in someone else's apartment for an afternoon alone was so refreshing. Maybe it was the change of venue or her view, she has a terrace that it was so relaxing.

On Sunday, we headed to the Skinny Cow Perfect Cup event in Soho. I have been to a lot of events but Skinny Cow and Warner's really had the organization down pat. Imagine hundreds of women lining up for a bra fitting. The women doing the fitting were really good at finding the right bra size and right bra. A free bra was worth the effort. Of course, we were able to try Skinny Cow's new product (full review will be forthcoming on NYC Single Mom Reviews.)

Not done yet. As if getting a free bra, trying new ice cream product wasn't enough, I interviewed supermodel Veronica Webb (again, full interview to come.) A teaser, she was gorgeous and super nice, and I am serious about the nice part, not an ounce of arrogance at all. She totally made me felt at ease.

After the event, I had to take my daughter to an old haunt of mine Bar 89. Back in the day, my friends used to end up there for dinner. It's exactly the same. Decor, food and the most of all the bathrooms. The bathrooms were well known all over town. When the bathroom doors are open, you can see into them but when you lock the door, the glass frosts up and obstructs people from seeing in. Lots of stories about people doing the nasty in those bathrooms and "forgetting" to lock the doors.

Erin Burnett Deserves a Medal for not Punching Mark Haines for his Sexist Comment (And no I am not being Sensitive)

I am no fan of Erin Burnett but Mark Haines is lucky she did not say on air what her face implied. "Go eff yourself." She was clearly holding back.

For those living under a rock, Armando Galarraga was pitching a no hitter (= perfect game) when the umpire called the runner safe thus robbing Galarraga of a perfect game. The umpire was WRONG. Because of the angle, that's what he saw and his call stands even though from another angle in the instant reply, the runner was clearly out. What did Galarraga do? Throw a temper tantrum, no he accepted the call graciously and like a good sport.

The umpire later apologized for making a bonehead move and was clearly upset that he robbed Galarraga of being the 21st pitcher to pitch a perfect game. (For those of who don't follow baseball, pitching nine innings and with no one getting on base is RARE.)

So while watching the video, Mark Haines, the CNBC correspondent says to Erin Burnett, "See why this is women aren't in charge of sports, " in response to Burnett's comments that the umpire was so gracious in apologizing to Armando Galarraga for getting the call completely wrong and thus blowing Galarraga's going down in the history books as the 21st pitcher to pitch a perfect game.

Haines is an idiot and a sexist and worse yet his tone was on patronizing. Every since this happened, every story has been about how gracious the umpire has been and that for the first time in a long time, a professional athlete has acted like a good sport instead of a highly paid entertainer and actually providing a role model for our kids.

Because remember, isn't that what we teach our kids when we want them to play a sport, "It's not about winning or losing, it's about the game, teamwork, etc."

Mark Haines should remember that and next time, he makes a sexist comment and Erin Burnett should risk getting fined and tell the jerk off.

Glee Live! My Daughter's First Concert

This weekend, I scored the hottest ticket in town, Glee Live!!! Goodness, gracious. The crowd was a mix of tween/teens and their parents although there were a few kids my daughter's age. Since I had no expectations, the concert was great. The show did not attempt to incorporate any of the show's backstories which was fine. It was designed as a broadway style show with the actors portraying their tv selves.

The show's stars really performed their hearts out, dancing and singing the show's best and most popular songs. The crowd was really into as you can imagine, singing along with each number.

The opening number was one of the most downloaded songs on iTunes, Don't Stop Believin. All the stars got their solo numbers from Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) singing "True Colors" (just plain wonderful), Puck (Mark Sailing) performing the Neil Diamond classic, "Sweet Caroline." Sailing was definitely a favorite amongst the girls and why not, he is definitely handsome and the show's bad boy.

Showstoppers included Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" with the cast wearing the same GaGa costumes from the May show, Mercedes (Amber Riley) singing "Beautiful" (give that girl her own recording contract, her voice is amazing,) Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Lea Michele) singing "Defying Gravity" which were the stand-outs in my opinion.

And I can not fail to mention Rachel (Lea Michele), undoubtedly, the show's star is truly an accomplished performer and singer. She really belted out "Don't Rain on My Parade."

I loved the show and so did my daughter. I was happy that my daughter knew most of the songs and learned some new ones. It was a great experience for both of us and I am glad we were able to go.

Of course, my only criticism has nothing to do with show but what future holds for us all. The decibel level of all those screaming teens was seriously unbelievable. I am sure I lost some hearing last night, from the high pitched squeals in the room. It seriously was deafening.

Cheerleaders handed out barf bags before the show. Fans know that the cheerios have no love for the Glee club.

Have a talented and artistic teen. The Noguchi Museum is now accepting applications for their summer teen program.

Making Your Mark (MYM) is a studio art program for teenagers. In this free program participants look at, and interpret art from a personal standpoint; experiment with art materials and methods; and create their own artwork. This year, students will work primarily with paint and 3D media, experimenting with foundation concepts like color, texture, tone, form, and material application. MYM participants will also prepare their work for portfolio presentation and for a final exhibition at the Museum.

MYM meets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 11 am – 2 pm, beginning on July 6, 2010 and finishing on August 12, 2010.

Memorial Day - Let's Remember the Military Men and Women Who Died Defending Our Country

Memorial Day is a day that we honor those who died while they served in the military. Sometimes, we forget why we have the day off because the day becomes a whirl of barbecues, 3 day weekend and shopping.

I thought in the honor of the men and women who have died for out country, I would provide a few facts because it reminds me why we have the day off and provides a teachable moment for my daughter why she doesn't have school. It also serves to remind her that my father proudly served in the Air Force for 20 years. Note, he did not die in military service.

Memorial Day was originially called Decoration Day.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday.
Memoral Day is observed on the last Monday of May.
Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868.

Let's say a prayer for those that died defending our country. And definitely say a prayer for those who are now fighting to keep us safe.

Not So Wordless Wednesday - Easter Bunny Pirate

My daughter never ceases to amaze and amuse me. This weekend, we went to a birthday party. As we were leaving, my daughter found a bunny stuffed animal in the gift bag. I have no idea why but all of sudden, she went from cute little easter bunny to pirate mode. My daughter put the bunny on her shoulder and pretended to the bunny was a parrot and started imitating a pirate.

It's the sound effects that make the video and make you laugh.

Dear Kid Saturday - Love of Science

Dear Darling Daughter,

I am thrilled and excited that you show such a passion and enthusiasm for science. Everyday you come home from school and are so eager to regale me with updates on the latest science lesson. I have learned about the life cycle of the various insects (e.g mealworm, butterflies, caterpillars, ) fun facts about air and the weather and so much more.

Your sense of wonder and excitement when you talk about your weekly lesson never ceases to amaze me. It really makes me stop and think that as adults we seem to lose that our sense of wonder about our surroundings either because we are too busy to stop and notice or we just aren't interested.

I am must admit that sometimes or actually most times, I have just plain forgotten how interesting science really is.

I hope you always keep that sense of wonderment, passion and curiosity about the world.

Fantastic Four Friday - Summer Sandals

Well, it's finally hot out there, which means skimpy clothing and sandals are making their appearances. So in the spirit of brand loyalty, I would repost my favorite sandals post from last year since nothing has changed in my love for these sandals.

Here are my Fantastic Four Sandals for the Summer:

1. Reefs Ginger - My friend, J turned me on to these a few years ago and they are my go to sandals for the summer. Comfortable, cushioned and form to fit your feet as you walk.

2. Birkenstock Gizeh - I resisted wearing Birkenstocks for years or should I say pretty much half my life. Seriously, it is the ugliest shoe known to man. Sometimes, fashion wins out over comfort. But a few years ago, someone

at the company wised up and started making cuter designs for women. Then I began seeing this version of the sandal all over the city which was super appealing and comes in a ton of cute colors. Of course, I had to ask every woman wearing them if they liked them and the statistically, unscientific response was an overwhelming, Yes. So I broke down and bought a pair and I love them. Fashionable but with the Birkenstock comfort.

3. Jack Rogers Navajo Flat Sandals - This sandal has been a perennial favorite of the Upper East Side and Palm Beach for years. The sandal became popular after Jackie O wore them in the 60's. In my opinion, it's a little dressier sandal but others would disagree as I see them pretty much everywhere. The problem with this sandal is that it comes in a million colors and since I don't have Oprah money and can only afford to buy a pair in every color, I bought pink. Why pink? Who knows? I am sure I was in my " I am not buying black today mood, I need color, dammit."So the flip side is that I can only wear the sandals with a few outfits. But so cute, it makes me want to go and buy more... Stop me.

4. Havianas - The cool, hip Jamaican sandals worn by Jamaicans and

supermodels. I discovered these sandals while actually in Jamaica a few years ago. They are cute, comfortable and affordable. This sandal comes in a host of colors to choose from, so go wild and buy a ton to match your favorite outfits.

Yesterday, my daughter decided to surprise me. She made sit in her room while she went about her business telling me not to open the door and until she was ready. After about 10 minutes, she came to get me, told me to close my eyes and led to me to the kitchen. She then asked me to help her pour the milk into glasses because the milk jug was too heavy (smart girl.) Then she led me back into the other room. Another five minutes passed and she said was ready.

Well lo and behold she had set the table, brought the food and drinks to the table and folded the napkins into an intricate triangle (see going to nice restaurants does pay off.) She even found the trivet she made in pre-school to use for the pot.

Sweet, right.

Oh, I forgot, then she said a prayer. Let me say for the record, when I was growing up we never said a prayer at the dinner table. This is something she does on her own which I am happy to support.

Surviving Volunteering at the Spring Concert

Last week I mentioned that the principal asked if I would volunteer to help the first grade teacher watch the first grade class while they waited for their turn to perform at the Spring concert.

Let me say for the record and I think we all agree, teachers have a tough job and don't get paid enough. That said, I have to think that the most difficult part of the job is dealing with a gaggle of kids and keeping your sanity.

Back to my volunteer efforts, I went up to the first grade classrooms to meet with one of the other first grade teachers and the other mom volunteers (hey, do the dads ever volunteer?) There were about 80 kids who were partaking in the Spring concert and were grouped in one classroom to watch a movie. Seems impossible, right, a class meant for 22 kids holding 80 kids but somehow they all fit.

As we waited and the kids enjoyed watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in relative quiet with of course, the burst of laughter. Then, we decided that we should ask if anyone had to go to the bathroom as a precaution to avoid having an accident during the concert. Good grief, all of sudden 30 kids had to go to the bathroom. Talk about mass chaos. After we dealt with the bathroom break, we had to calm them down and literally corral them to go downstairs to the auditorium.

I am not kidding about corraling kids. Lining up 80 kids in an orderly manner, getting them to look straight ahead, and quietly to boot is a test in patience. Goodness. As we waited in the gym to lead them in the auditorium, I unluckily pulled the back of the line duty. Imagine you have been sitting for 45 minutes, you have to stand in line and wait for 5 minutes and you are in the back of the line. Those kids were literally all over the place. One little boy kept wandering around me, behind me. You have to eyes in the back of your head to keep them all in place. I kept having visions of losing a child. Can you imagine? NO!!!

Finally, it was time to go into the auditorium. It's funny the perspective you have when you are leading them into the auditorium. The kids naturally start looking for their parents and the parents start snapping photos and waving to their child. Very endearing, touching and sweet.

Needless to say getting them on stage was a piece of cake since they were excited to sing for their parents and family and I was happy to at least sit and enjoy the concert. After they sang their three songs, we had to take them back up up to the classroom and wait for the other classes to perform and then head back down to the finale.

Again, we had to quiet them down from the excitement and have them wait. Needless to say, there were some antsy kids in the room.

After 10 minutes, we had to line them up again and lead them back down to the auditorium. What can I say, it was chaos all over again. The finale was quite chaotic since all three grades were up on the stage but I did not care, it was great and the kids get so excited to sing.

Bet you thought I was done, nope. We had to take the kids to the cafeteria where the parents could pick up their kids. My oh my, kids, parents everywhere. After the last child was found by their parent, we were free to go.

I am glad I volunteered, it always a good thing to see all the kids my daughter talks about and how they interact and frankly I like the backstage view. I think every parent should volunteer because its not easy managing that many kids, it really offers a new respect for what the teachers to every day.

Will I volunteer again? Probably, only because it makes my daughter happy.

The Lost Finale - Still Wondering

Unless you are living under a rock, you know that last night was the Lost Finale. After six seasons, the producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindeloff ended the show.

Let me say that I liked the finale although I have tons of questions and I cried twice.

My Other Car is a Ferrari - Getting Around New York City

Most New Yorkers don't have a car for the simple fact that the monthly maintenance to have a car in the city is $$$. Living here is expensive enough, unless you have some great rent stabilized apartment. If you meet someone with a car, do the math in your head, monthly lease = $400-600, monthly parking = $250-500, insurance ($have no idea) and gas. That's a lot. Way out of my league.

So how do I get around, when I need to buy tons of stuff; the traditional "granny cart." When I moved to New York City, I refuse to buy one, it seemed so unseemly and less than chic. The only people pushing them were old ladies. I resisted for a long time, buying other more attractive and expensive carts. Alas, those more expensive carts could not do the heavy hauling I needed.

I finally broke down and bought a granny cart. And why? I was spring cleaning last year and I had to go to the Salvation Army with a gazillion bags to donate. The idea of taking a taxi seemed ludicrous as well as making 10 trips to get it all out of my house. So I bought the granny cart and made one trip.

This week, again, it's spring cleaning time and they were having paper sale at the Staples so the granny cart out made an appearance on the street.

Being Early Doesn't Always Pay

We have to be at school by 8:20, otherwise, we get a late pass. So in my ernest efforts to teach my daughter to be on time, we arrive early just or as the door magically opens to her class. There are only a couple of kids from her class that get dropped off and when I mean dropped off, the parent leaves them at the classroom door and leaves. I guess if I was working and had to be at my job by 9, I would be doing the same. But since I don't, I wait around with my daughter until she goes into the classroom.

Before my daughter goes into the classroom, she has to take her stuff out of her backpack because her teacher insists that the children take out all their stuff before they enter the class so as not to be distracted once they enter the class. Smart woman.

So this past week, as I patiently (okay, maybe not so patiently) waiting for the classroom door to open, the principal is making her rounds, coming down the hallway, saying hello to kids and the parents. But honestly, I think she is patrolling the hallways to make sure, we, parents and kids are not blocking the hallway.

As she approaches me, I am thinking she is going to say hello. Instead, she sidles up to me and asks if I am going to the Spring concert. "Sure," I say naively and unwittingly falling into her trap.

Next thing you know, I had volunteered to help keep my daughter's class occupied before they have to go to the auditorium for the concert.

This should be fun or at the minimum interesting watching the kids and the teacher. Stay tuned for the aftermath. Let's hope I survive.

Fantastic Four Friday - 4 Tips for New Single Mom Sandra Bullock

Unless you have been living under a rock, we all know that Sandra Bullock is now the proud mom of a baby boy, Louis Bardo Bullock.

As you can surmise from my blog name (duh), I am also a single mom. I adopted my daughter when she was just 11 days old. Now that she is a single mom, I wanted to give Sandra my two cents worth on being a single mom. I won't bore any one with "single parenting is hard" routine (but it is.) Moving on...

Four Tips for New Single Mom Sandra Bullock:

1. Add Mom Friends especially Single Mom Friends into your inner circle - I love my single friends (two are my daughter's godmothers) and my married mom friends but my single mom friends really get what I am going through raising a child on my own. All of these great moms keep me from losing my mind, offer great advice mom-related and non-mom related, listen to me whine on occasion (or ramble on) and can commiserate and emphathize on all the little things about bringing up a child.

2. Make Mommy Time (And Don't Feel Guilty) - There is nothing wrong with making time for yourself. Yes, it's hard to be away from your child but you need to recharge and reenergize yourself. I love my daughter but nothing is more refreshing than getting eight hours of sleep, sleeping in, going to an adult movie (hey, not that kind) or getting a mani/pedi. And sometimes, yes, it's okay to go away for a couple of days, it doesn't make you a bad mommy. I am still trying to schedule this year's trip.

3. Don't Be Afraid to Ask For Help - Hillary Clinton is right "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child." I don't have family that live nearby so I have had to ask for help from friends and other families. I took me a long time to ask for help and not feel guilty about burdening other parents but now, I just do it. Everyone is happy to help you. They get it.

4. Get Up Earlier - Right now, I am sure your son is not sleeping through the night but one day. My body is conditioned now but there is nothing more relaxing and peaceful than to wake up early, have cup of coffee and read the paper (or scour the internet) in peace before the madness of the day begins. Of course, there are others who would rather get that extra time to sleep but personally, I rather get my day started in peace and quiet versus a whirlwind.

This isn't a tip but I look at the photo of you with your son and it makes me reflect on the day I went to pick my duaghter up and seeing her for the first time. I see the happiness in your eyes and remember that day.

Good luck and hey if you ever need a babysitter, my seven year old daughter just loves hanging out with little kids.

Therapy Thursday - Outsourcing Homework Help

Homework - it is the bane of my existence, okay, maybe not the bane of my existence but it's pretty close.

Every Monday, my daughter comes home with her lime-green homework packet. In my mind, homework is like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, you never know which one you are going to get. It's either, let's break out the champagne, we're done or someone's going to die (yes, a tad bit dramatic but it's true), but hey these are my feelings and you must accept them.

My daughter's homework is split into two components, math and reading. The reading assignment consists of reading a set of chapter books that my daughter has chosen. Once she has completed the reading, she must write the name of the book, the author's name and a comment about the book. Seems simple doesn't it and usually it is.

A couple of weeks ago, my daughter got her knickers in a twist or should I say her knickers were completely wrapped too tightly around her head. She literally worked herself into an irrational frenzy about how the starter sentences did not make sense for her to write her comments.

At the beginning of the year, a page of starter sentences were included in the homework packet to help the kids write their comments. Sentences such as "I liked it when.., I enjoyed..., I was happy when.., My favorite character is.." You get the idea.

First, she couldn't find the starter sentence page and then she could not get any of the starter sentences to "work" for her. They made no sense to her.

When I say she is an irrational frenzy, I mean she is hysterical, crying, frustrated and writhing on the floor say over and over again "that makes no sense." I literally read her 20 starter sentence to which she replied to each of the starter sentences, "that makes no sense, that sentence makes no sense" over and over again. Good grief.

This went on for twenty minutes where I tried to reason with her and try to calm her down. Finally, I redirected her to start her math homework, at which she finally calmed down.

The next week, it was math's turn. Oh good, lord. First of all, the overwhelming insanity of math is that it's TERC math. What's TERC math, you ask? TERC math is some crazy new math that the NYC public schools are teaching. TERC math is all about the how to solve a math problem as opposed to simple memorization. It's all about using friendly numbers like "10" and using manipulatives to add/subtract numbers to come up with the answer. That is in it's simplest form.

For the math homework, the kids have to "show" how they solved the problem. You would think that DOE would have simple worksheets for the parents on how to show the work but no, that would be too simple to help and engage the parents since every one over the age 25 learned math another way.

That said, on average, my daughter's math homework is pretty simple but every few weeks, there is a speed bump that just throws off the entire homework session.

So given that it's up to my daughter to learn TERC math in school, retain it and then be able to do the homework with no parental assistance shows you where I am going with this, right.

I won't go into the problem she was trying to solve but needless to say her written explanation of the response was wrong and as she explained it three times to me, increasingly getting more upset and frustrated and yelling (yes, yelling) "mommy, you are not listening." I, could only reply, "yes, I am listening but your answer is wrong." Let's face it, math is either right or wrong.

As I am telling my therapist this, she says to me that I really need to consider "outsourcing" the homework. At first, I was somewhat hesitant as it seemed crazy, isn't that my job and shouldn't I be more patient to get through this.

Then I realized that she is right. The homework is going to get progressively more difficult and the arguments are going to get progressively worse if the situation doesn't change. At some point, she needs to learn to do the homework in a more relaxed and focused manner. I really don't want her to end up equating homework with arguing. Then the arguments won't be about the homework, it will deteriorate into doing the homework.

Yes, it may be more money but in the long run, I have to think what is best for our sanity and our relationship.

Wordless Wednesday - Kids Club 13 First Event at Prospect Park Zoo

Last Sunday, I spent Mother's Day at Prospect Park Zoo. This was the first event for Kids Club 13, the new family membership run by New York City's Channel 13.

Although it was cold, (okay, maybe we would not have been so cold, if we were dressed properly), the activities for club members were not only fun, interactive but informative.

Herbie the 20lb. rabbit made an appearance. If I hadn't seen that rabbit in person, I would never have believed how huge he was. The kids were able to touch Herbie using the proper technique of touching pets, (2 fingers close together petting the animal in downward stroke, who knew?)

Ruff Ruffman, was the official mascot of the event and definitely was a hit with the kids. We finished off the event with an Explorers Challenge, looking for answers to questions about animals in the zoo. So much fun and a very interactive game for parents and kids.

Maybe There is Someone Jewish in the Family - Summer Camp Part 2

As I mentioned in an earlier post, Summer Camp Dilemma, summer camp is a big topic right now in the city.

As you might expect, your kids want to participate in activities with their school friends and summer camp is no different. My daughter has been pestering me to find out where two of her classmates are going.

I finally ran into one of the moms after drop off and asked her where her daughter was going and she told me a camp outside the city.

I said "That's nice, it's pretty there." And then she leaned over and said "It's a Jewish summer camp."

I am thinking okay, not for us, not so much because it's a Jewish camp because her current camp actually incorporates little elements of the Jewish religion (e.g. making Challah bread, observing Jewish holidays, etc.) but because she would be the only black kid there. Don't write in, I know there are black Jews in the world.

Before I had a chance to respond, "Hey, maybe it's not for us,"she says "It's a great camp, maybe there is someone Jewish in your daughter's family and you could still apply."

Be aware, she knows my daughter is adopted. And before you jump to any conclusions about her motives, I have had playdates with this family and she in no way said it a condescending or facetious or any other kind of way. She really is a nice person and I took her comment to be sincere and wanting me not to feel excluded.

I think I muttered something like, "I don't think so but hey you never know" and left it at that.

This is so an "Only In New York Story."

Publishing Party a Success

Recently, my daughter's class had her publishing party. I must admit, I was dreading it and not because I did not want to hear my child read her story about seals, it's because last year, the class was split into two sections and we had to listen to 10 kids over an hour period. It was pretty excruciating having to clap, "ew" and "ah" for that long a period of time. I love to support other children's work but let's face, an hour is a long time.

But my daughter's teacher, maybe through experience or feedback separated the class into four groups with only five children each and it went swimmingly.

I have to admit that while my daughter's story was cute and informative, she definitely read it loudly for all to hear. I have mentioned that my daughter is a talker and quite outgoing but when it comes to reading or talking in front of crowds, she is so quiet and shy.

As someone who is not a natural public speaker and gets nervous in front of crowds, I feel it's my duty to really prep my daughter from an early age to try to be a more natural public speaker. Being comfortable in front of crowds is tough and in business it's even tougher. I have seen too many people not rise through the ranks because of this area. Sadly, being competent at your job is not enough these days to succeed, you need to present a confident exterior that makes people feel they can rely on you.

So kudos for a job well done.

This week, I attended the Time to Play.mag.com 2010 Spring Showcase featuring the best new toys that will be introduced over the coming weeks and month. Fun Fact. Did you know that toy introductions are not just for Christmas anymore? I didn't.

Kate Gosselin and NYC Single Mom Together - Newsweek Online Article

Last week, I was interviewed for an article for Newsweek online about supporters of Kate Gosselin.

To the writer, I was a supporter of Kate based on my postings on my blog and I guess I am to the extent that in my opinion she has to support those eight kids and darn it, if ABC was willing to put her on Dancing with the Stars and pay her over $250,000 to do it and TLC is giving her another reality show, more power to her.

All the Kate haters, expect her to stay home or go back to nursing to support her kids. Let's face it, she needs to earn as much money as she can while she can because she will run her course in the next couple of years and the gravy train will be over.

And let me say this in the event, I ever get a book deal or become famous, you realize after being interviewed, there is a reason that celebrities, authors, athletes, politicians sound they way they do. Left to your own devices, you could seriously ramble and completely get misquoted or have your words twisted. That's what PR folks are for to coach you. Luckily for me the writer of the article actually me sound more eloquent that I was in that interview. So thanks.

Sandra Bullock adopts a baby boy - From one adoptive single mom to another Congrats

Imagine everyone's surprise (or shock) this morning to the news that Sandra Bullock adopted a baby boy.

I actually cried when I saw the People cover, I was so excited for her.

I know, I know, I am talking about her like I know her but it says something about her character that she chose to not introduce him to the world during the Oscar hoopla. Can you imagine what the paparrazzi craziness would have been like if they knew about the baby? It wasn't enough that they were stalking her but if they knew about the baby, it would have been madness with everyone trying to get the first shot of baby Louis.

As a single mom who adopted on my own, I want to welcome her to the club. Given her relationship with Jesse James' children, I am sure she will be a great mother.

And to her friends who kept her secret, they really should be commended. The little boy, Louis will not only have a great mom who is interested in protecting him but Ms. Bullock, obviously has a network of supportive friends and family who are there for her and her baby boy.

Wordless Wednesday - Do you remember when?

In my efforts to get organized (which if worked 24/7 will never happen,) I found some photos. Lord have mercy, remember when you had to go and stock up on film and get them developed. That wasn't that long ago.

Luckily, the company where I had my film developed offered a dvd option and lo and behold, I uploaded a ton of photos of my daughter when she was about 5-6 months.

What a happy baby!!!

I remember this contraption, it was such a life saver. I lived in a third floor walk-up and literally ran up, dropped my daughter off in this thing and ran down to get the stroller and bags. Sounds crazy, right. That stopped when she started walking. Imagine carrying a child, a stroller and grocery bags.

Ahh, the swing. Those were great restful moments when she fell asleep.

Summer Camp Dilemma

What's on every New York parent's mind, right now. Summer Camp.

"Where is your child going to camp?" I must get asked this question, 3-4 times a week or I am asking someone where their child is going to camp. I am not sure if going to camp is a Northeast or New York thing but when I was growing up no one I knew went to camp. Although, I do remember wanting to go to "fat camp" (yes, even back then I was dieting.)

For those outside of New York, you are wondering why this could possibly be the topic of the day. Because like everything in this town, there is not just not one choice, but a myriad of camp choices which includes creative camps (art, dance, chess, language), athletic camps (fencing, soccer), science camps (robo camp, the Intrepid museum) and of course, the traditional day camp (out-of-town and city.)

And because this is New York, nothing comes cheap and there is a hierarchy to camps based on price.
I am not sure if the 92nd StreetY run Camp Yomi, located on an incredibly, beautiful Rockland County campus, is at the top of the hierarchy but at $5,500 for 8 weeks, it seems like it to me.

Because it's almost impossible to tour and research all the camps, why not just ask, right, plus there is a little competitive nature going on in determining how much people are willing to spend to entertain or educate their child over the summer. This is New York, after all and it's all about the money in this town.

So what did I end up doing? I am sending my daughter to a day camp outside of the city. I grew up in the suburbs surrounded by walking trails, tennis courts and of course, a backyard. My daughter experiences that only a few times a summer and I really wanted her to experience the great outdoors even if it's only during the day. But, more importantly while my daughter is no girly girl, she gets freaked out by ants and little crawly things. Insects, any suburban kid sees everyday, for goodness sakes. She seriously needs to be amongst the flora and the fauna and experience nature. Plus, I need to toughen her up for the cross country road trip that I am planning when she is in junior high (won't that be fun???)

When Worlds Collide - The British author Linda Grant has discovered me

Last week, I was thoroughly surprised that the other Linda Grant commented on my Fantastic Four Friday: 4 Reasons I love my iPhone.

I discovered the other Linda Grant when I googled Linda Grant last year as I was curious as to whether I would show up and the British Linda Grant took up pages on Google. Up until then, I had never heard of her.

I find it completely humorous that the other Linda Grant is british and an author. Both things I want to be. Just kidding about the British part although I love London. Not kidding about the author part.

I have been dying to read her book and think that it's probably time to order them as they sound very interesting. I want to be prepared when she comes across the pond so I can have her autograph the book.

Jillian Michael's Quote Regarding Adopting is Pretty Offensive and Misguided

Last year, I met Jillian Michaels at an event promoting her fitness dvds and while hey, I met her for only a few minutes, you could tell she was committed to being fit.

So it does not come as a surprise that she does not want to get pregnant and ruin her hard fought, I used to be fat body. Frankly, I could care less that she does not want to get pregnant, what made me write this post is her quote on her reasons for adopting as an alternative to getting pregnant.

Here is her quote from the Huffington Post article. "I am going to adopt. I can't handle doing that to my body." she told the magazine. "Also, when you rescue something, it's like rescuing a part of yourself."

First of all, one doesn't adopt because they have a saviour complex and needs to rescue another human being. That is so incredibly misguided and somewhat narcissistic.

You adopt because you WANT to be a mother.
You adopt because you want this little person to be a part of your life.
You adopt because you want to be a family whether if you are married, have a partner or single.
You adopt because you have nothing but unconditional love to give.

I certainly hope that the social worker doing her homestudy asks her the tough questions about why she wants to be a mother because I am pretty sure that is not a good enough reason to adopt.

Therapy Thursday - Getting back on track

Unlike most parents, I somehow let our daily routine fall into the abyss during our long breaks. And the recent eleven day spring break was no different. And like my drinking, I know I shouldn't have that third glass of wine, but I do and suffer the repercussions. When will I learn? Apparently, never when it comes to my drinking or keeping my daughter in a routine.

The break started off great but little by little, my daughter ends up staying up later and of course, getting up later. Honestly, it just plain selfish of me to let her sleep in. I get such enjoyment out of reading the paper and sipping my coffee in peace and quiet rather than running around drinking my coffee in sips and gulps as we get ready in the morning.

The flip side to letting ourselves slide off our scheduled track is that it takes a while to get back to our regular routine. It's like starting all over again. And who do I have to blame for this, me, me, me.

When I told my therapist how we had fared after the break, she just looked at me and said "what about the rewards and consequences chart we so painstakingly worked on?" "Oh that!? I forgot. "

"Aha, moment, right." Like everything in my life and in general, life and stuff gets in the way and continuing good habits.

Not only does my daughter need to be reminded of what the rewards and consequences of not following the rules are, but apparently so do I.

So of course, when we went got home that evening, I had to review the chart with my daughter and yes, things are back on track.

And to ensure, I don't forget again, I have entered "reviewing the chart" into my iPhone calendar so she and I can review it on a monthly basis.

Wordless Wednesday - Karate Promotion to Advanced Blue Belt

Our children will never know...

A class parent forwarded this onto me. I don't usually read chain emails but this one was particularly timely as another dad today asked what an iPod touch was and I thought my friend you are in big trouble.

Of course, I feel old every time my daughter adds games to my iPhone and can figure out all the functions.

So just in case you weren't feeling old today.

The people who are starting college this fall were born in 1991. I was living in Japan in 1991, teaching English. What were you doing in 1991?

Their lifetime has always included AIDS. I remember the day, Magic Johnson announced he was HIV positive because my dad was still alive.

The CD was introduced two years before they were born. And now, they will only to buy songs from the internet, in fact that's the only way I buy music now.

They have always had cable. Except two of my friends with kids who don't have cable.

Popcorn has always been microwaved. Have you ever made homemade popcorn with your kids? Every so often I see a popcorn maker in the store and think, "Well, maybe I will buy it, then common sense gets the better of me and I put it back. Too messy."

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws. Although now, there seems to be a shark attack every couple of years so maybe they have other reasons to be afraid of the water.

They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter. Good lord, a couple of weeks ago, my daughter and I were in an antique store (yes, antique) and there it was a typewriter and my daughter asked me what it was and I tried to explain it to her and she just look perplexed and confused. Please I remember going to business school in 1992 and having to go to the computer lab to get work done.

Adoption Tale - Adopting as a Single Woman

It's been awhile since I have done a adoption post and wanted to revisit it on a ongoing basis. Today's post recounts the day I found I was going to be a mom. It's a long post since I am working on a book of my adoption experience and this is going to part of the book. Please provide feedback and questions.

But's It Only Tuesday...

And so it began, a morning like so many before, starting wistfully out my window at the Statue of Liberty. I began to run through all the items on my to do list that need to be completed by the end of the day - draft agenda for J's leadership meeting, begin draft on her presentation in preparation for meeting with G next week, teambuilding ideas and on and on. ...

As my computer slowly booted up, and I mean slowly, I reflected on how lucky I was to have this incredible unobstructed view of the 43rd floor of the World Financial Center.

Actually luck had nothing to do with having this view. September 11 made this view happen. Because our company headquarters was impacted by September 11, the entire building needed to be cleaned to remove debris from the lower floors when the windows were blown out when the World Trade Center feel. All the employees were relocated throughout the tri-state area. That experience is another chapter.

Due to the position I had, one of my responsibilities was to manage the move back to the building for our group and low and behold, the number one responsiblity was floor space assignments. So why not give myself the best view on the floor.

Back to my story, I had gotten in early one March morning so that I could get some emails done and have a leisurely breakfast before the floor became alive with people.

Then the phone rang, which I though odd because it was so early. "Darn it," I comtemplated not answering the phone since I did not recognize the area code but did anyway.

"Good morning, are you sitting down?" asked T, the adoption agency director.

"Yes, I am at my desk," I said, thinking who doesn't sit at their desk. "What kind of wacky question is that?" Isn't amazing what pops into your head at the most inopportune moments?

"We have a little girl for you," she calmly stated.

Racing through my mind, I thought over the past years, I had heard those words before but there always something just not right with child's circumstances or the mother changed her mind at the last minute, all those situations resulted in disappointment, a feeling of rejection and a gnawing feeling that my being a mother was never going to happen.

Gathering my composure and quickly blocking those negative thoughts out of mind, I somehow blurted out, "Tell me about her."

But I wasn't really listening, feeling like a character in a Charlie Brown show where you never see the parents but only hear the "Waa," "Waa," "Waa," noise.

As the director began providing detail about the little baby girl (and I mean baby, she was only three days old), I realized that my journey to be a mother was over and the next chapter of my life was just beginning.

Again, crazy thoughts popped in my head. "Yikes, what had I done?' "I am nuts," All of sudden it hit me, I am no longer alone. My life is now going to be as a single mother living in a small one bedroom apartment in a third floor walk up on MacDougal Street, raising her child alone with no family or support group.

After providing details about the birth mother (young teenager,) reality set back in when the director asked,

"Can you pick her up on, Friday?"

Stunned after being inundated with details about my daughter, her birth mother, I blurted out, "But it's only Tuesday, you want me to pick her up on Friday? Thats in three days!"

Pulling myself together, I calmly asked, "Can I pick her up on Monday?"

The director said, "Okay." I am sure she wondered why after I had waited so long and had called every few weeks to check on my application.

"I have to get my life and work in order, I don't exactly have the type of job that I can drop everything and go." The work part was true, my manager knew that I was trying to adopt. I knew she would be somewhat sympathetic and understanding because she had adopted three children from Russia although I am not sure how sympathetic given I had three days notice to sort out all my work assignments. The work situation aside, I did not want to admit that my apartment was ill-equipped to handle an infant. Because I had waited so long and did want constant reminders in my tiny one-bedroom, I had not gone out and bought clothes, accessories, nothing.

I needed the weekend to get my act together.

"Fine, see you on Monday and congratulations." she said.

Luckily, no one came into my cube after I hung up because I was shaking so much. Slowly, my tears began to tear up. I turned to stare out at the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of renewal and new beginnings for the immigrants who passed through Ellis Island and I began to sob.

Of course, my rational and practical side kicked in and I began thinking, "Could I actually get my life in order in just five days? Who knows.

And off I went to find my manager to tell her the news so I could start the next chapter of my life, being a mother.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick at Karate Promotion

This morning's big event was that Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick were at the dojo where my daughter's karate promotion was taking place.

It's always fun to watch and see jaded new yorkers try as they may to resist being in the glow of celebrity but can't help themselves and I include myself in that camp.

Before the program begin, I love all whispering "did you see Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick?" "Where?" Of course, once the program started, we all focused on what's important, our kids.

I must admit, I feel bad for them because hey they are just there to see their son graduate to the next level of karate and they have to deal with people like me taking their photos.

Sorry, SJP, I need one of those paparazzi cameras that takes thousands of photos in two seconds otherwise this would be a better shot since you looked pretty good for it being 8:30 in the am. I was trying to take the photo and keep an eye on my daughter in the sea of kids and parents.

This is one of those US Weekly "There just like us photos." And let me say, that my daughter was not in standing in the same direction.

Fantastic Four Friday - 4 Reasons I love my iPhone

Since I am talking about my iPhone and not the iPad, it's obvious that I am not an early adopter of technology.

The iPhone was introduced in 2007 (can you believe it?) and when did I get around to joining the cool kids, late 2009.

And why did it take so long? Because I'd rather all the early adopters spend the $$$, Apple work out all the bugs that come with a first generation product and because I was in the middle of my phone contract and it was not worth the extra $300 to break the contract to buy the phone.

So after two years of iPhone envy, I finally bought one and with the exception of the short battery life, I love my iPhone.

Here are four reasons, I love my iPhone. All of the following are features of the phone.

1. Voice Memos - I love this feature the most because when I want to remember key ideas, places or my daughter's quotes, all you have to do is the hit voice memo button and record it. No more fumbling for paper and pencil or forgetting stuff.

Let's face it, we moms have too much to remember with school forms, doctor's appointments, bills and life, sometimes the things you want to remember most just doesn't seem to be able to stick in our brains the way they used to.

I can name two instances this little feature turned out to be quite helpful.

I was concerned that my daughter might have sleep apnea because she wow she can really saw those logs. I was able to tape her snoring and play her snoring for her pediatrician. The pediatrician was amazed she always asks parents to do this but they never do and I was the first parent to tape their kids snoring. And no she doesn't have sleep apnea, she just snores loudly.
Last week, I went to the Dove Spa event and took part in a MAC eye makeover. I loved the eyeshadow that the makeup artist used on me. It looked amazing. Without the voice memo function, I would never be able to remember the eye shadow or maybe it was the wine.

2. Timer/Stopwatch - I never thought I would ever use this feature but realized it's utilty on playdates. As you can imagine, if there is only one toy and everyone wants to play with it, nothing but arguing and crying ensues. Now I tell the kids, I am using the stopwatch and when the timer goes off, you have to switch turns. Problem solved.

3. Maps - I admit, I am terrible at getting around New York City especially in neighboorhoods I am not that familiar with. Hey sometimes, I get lost trying to get to places I have been to before like my daughter's godmother apartment in Brooklyn. With this feature, you can never be lost. The GPS tracks your current location and then provides a map to your intended location. Voila!!!

4. Voice Mail/Texting - Sure all phones have voice mail and text capability but now you can play the voice mails you want versus listening to them in order that you want with a press of a button. And being able to follow the text threads for a particular person has seriously impacted my life. How you say? You would be surprised at how often I refer to previous threads for a phone number or confirm the address from someone. Plus you can attache photos to a text message, say what? Yes.
