The Ants are Dead

I stupidly said yes to my daughter receiving an ant farm for Christmas. It sounded like a good idea at the time. Of course, you have to order the ants separately since ants don't exactly have a long shelf life.

After months of reminders, I finally ordered the ants and they arrived unbeknownst to my daughter.

Instead of opening the package right away, I just left them sitting on a shelf. Finally, yesterday, I opened the envelope knowing full well, the ants were dead AND there they were lying prone all bunched in the tube.

Passive/aggressive behaviour, I know but I just don't want to deal with the thought of having ants escaping and multiplying in my apartment.  I am so not a pet person.

I now have come up with a cover story, not to be confused with lying, about what is happening with the ants.

I'd not worry about the ants multiplying. The companies that mail ant farm ants don't ship them with queens (that's illegal, anyway), and worker ants are anatomically incapable of reproducing.

Thanks for the info. I feel so guilty about this, I will get up the courage to send away for them.
