Dear Kid Saturday - A Wonderful Lunch Companion

Dear Darling Daughter,

Last week, we were invited to view Nickelodeon's 2010 Toy Line. This event just happened to fall on the day that the snowstorm hit New York City and all the kids were out of school.  Nickelodeon graciously offered to invite you to the viewing and you  graciously accepted your fate, although, I am sure you would have preferred to have tested out your new sled.

As the Nickelodeon's offices are in Times Square, I thought why not kill two birds with one stone. Be a tourist (Jumpstart Challenge creeps in  here) in my own city and take you for Snow Day lunch treat.

And where did we go? Bubba Gumps Shrimp Restaurant. In a million years, it would never occur to me to go to this tourist haven. Frankly, I can't believe it exists. How does one base a restaurant chain on Forest Gump? Of course, I am still shocked Hard Rock Cafe still stands, but I digress.

You were thrilled because you had already visited the restaurant after seeing the Little Mermaid with one of your pre-school friends.  I knew that the kids menu was only $4.99, so good $$ deal for my budget.

We sat upstairs at a window table watching the snow fall and looking out all the Times Square HD screens. We have been to lunch/dinner a gazillion times and it's not exactly relaxing or fun. It always a string of events that just detracts from the entire meal, "I need to go to the bathroom, crawling under the table, spilling something, wandering around the restaurant and just plain whining. Sorry kiddo.

This lunch date was a different story. In fact, for the first time, I truly enjoyed having lunch with you. We discussed a wide range of topics,  the theme of the restaurant (you trying explaining Forest Gump and what Run Forest Run means), your classmates, beetles (this month's science project), what we are going to do for your birthday, and all the images on Times Square screens. No restlessness, no whining.

So my darling daughter, thank you so much for a lovely and leisurely lunch which lasted more than 15 minutes.

Love,
Mommy

That was so cute - and I hate it when they crawl around because everything is SO gross!! Glad you had a nice lunch and I hope the rest of the day went that way too!
Swati
ps we have a Bubba Gumps in Chicago too - but I've managed to escape it's grip.
