Operation Fairy Dust - Prom & Formals Dresses Needed

In Sunday's  New York Times, there was an article about an organization, Operation Fairy Dust that collects gently used prom dresses and formal wear for girls who can't afford to buy a prom dress.

So if you have any dresses (less than 10 years) lying around your house, head to Cameo Cleaners which is handling most of the donations. Cameo Cleaners will take care of cleaning and pressing of the garment.

What better way to spend an afternoon, cleaning out your closet and reminiscing about long lost evenings (good and bad) to help out a young girl who otherwise could not afford a dress for the prom. P.S. I am sure  they will take a newly purchased dress as well.

Donations are being accepted until April 15th.

To learn more about the event, here is a video from last year's event. It's  pretty touching video.

New York Single Mom Staycation Travelogue December 24, 2009 - Baking Cookies

December 24, 2009 - Decided to bake cookies for Santa's arrival tonight.

This is what the cookies were supposed to look like and...

Well, it's the thought that counts and that my daughter and I did these together as a family.

For all the bakers, cake, cookie and cupcake decorators, you are my heroines and I salute you, seriously.  Goodness,   it's hard to decorate cookies.

And by the way, I used store bought sugar cookie mix and icing. The cookies taste great and the icing, yuck.

Note to self, buy proper utensils to decorate with, practice, practice and make the sugar cookies from scratch.

Wordless Wednesday - Future Rockette?

Last month, courtesy of my mom blogger friend Beth Feldman @rolemommy.com, we headed off to the opening night of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

P.S. I love the dress she is wearing and am sad that it is the last year she will be able to wear it.

Full disclosure, my daughter and I have attended the show for the last three years so I can fully recommend adding the show to your list of annual traditions regardless that we went this year gratis.

Moms of Hue Officially Launches Today

Just wanted to support fellow moms and bloggers by announcing the launch of Moms of Hue . The site was started by Kristina Daniele (Mom on the Rise) and Renee J. Ross as a way to provide a forum for issues relevant to  Moms of color and women and men raising children of color.

In support of the official launch, the site is hosting a number of giveaways and tweeting about Moms of Hue. Just use hashtag#momsofhue all day today.

I have to say that I am happy that Kristina and Renee are starting this forum as I do see the importance of the voice of Mom's of Hue and that there is a gap in the moms of color forum space.  Hope that they get some real buzz in the media for their efforts.

It's exciting to see a new start up happening so hope you will join them in their efforts and add to the dialogue.

Holly and Hal Moose: Our Uplifting Christmas Adventure

Powered by Whrrl

After years of Pixar films, I think adults are spoiled when it comes to children's movies. We were invited to see the premiere of Holly and Hal Moose: Our Uplifting Christmas Adventure at the Build-A-Bear Workshop over the weekend.

The movie is one hour feature produced by ABC Family but for me it felt longer. It was a cute movie with an inspiring message about following your dreams. In a nutshell, Hal Moose, Holly's brother runs and discovers Santa's Workshop. Hal Moose wants to help Santa by flying with the other reindeer when a big snowstorm comes and threatens Christmas. Well Hal ends up helping thus achieving his dream.
I thought the movie was cute but mentioned following your dreams, and uplifting a few too many times. I also wasn't fond of the color of the movie. The animation seemed washed out plus the moose characters looked like the Backyardigans characters.

All that said, I asked my daughter what she thought of the movie and she said she liked it. During the movie, all the children including my daughter were transfixed by the story.

There you have it, as an adult, it was okay but from a child's perspective, a good movie. My daughter said she would watch it again when it came on television.

The Premiere of the movie is
Tuesday, November 24, 2009 @ 7:00 pm.  (est) and an encore performance on Saturday, November 28, 2009 @10am (est.)

Let me know what you think.

Bello is Back! - Discounted Tickets Available for the Big Apple Circus

The Big Apple Circus is back for it's annual run. The show is a mixture of fun, acrobatics and slapstick comedy. It keeps everyone riveted to the action, even me. My daughter loves going and it has become an annual tradition for us. And who doesn't love clowns. The Big Apple Circus has two famous clowns, Bello with his Kid n Play do, America's Best Clown according to Time magazine and the loveable Grandma. One of the key advantages of the Big Apple Circus is that because of the size of the venue, no seat is a bad seat.

Performances of Bello is Back! run through January 18th under the Big Top at Damrosch Park in Lincoln Center.

To purchase your discounted tickets* (savings up to $30 per ticket) to the Big Apple Circus: http://bigapplecircus.org/pop.aspx and submit the code POP10 in the Promotional Codes box

By Phone: CALL 888-541-3750 and mention code POP10

In Person: Big Top Box Office 10AM–6PM daily. No service fee. Bring a copy of this blog post

*Offer good on select seat locations and performances. Must present this blog post to receive discount at the box office. Performance schedule subject to change. Wintuk - A Winter Wonderland 30% off Children's Tickets

Being a big fan Cirque Du Soleil, I have seen several shows here in New York and Las Vegas,  so I was thrilled to be offered tickets to see Wintuk.

Wintuk is about a little boy, Jamie who is in search of snow. Jamie lives in this cool city and encounters a whole host of interesting characters that run the gamut from acrobats to talking lamp posts as he goes on a quest to Wintuk to bring back snow

So how was it? . If you know anything about Cirque du Soleil, the shows  integrates acrobatics and a more than memorable sound track into the story lines. From the opening scene of wildly colored skateboarders, acrobatic bikers to dancing lamposts (mechanized, not real) to dancing dogs (as life like as you are going to get) to 30 foot walking birds to the memorable ending, the show was phenomenal.

My daughter (in my opinion, is  the hardest kid to keep amused) was memorized from beginning to end. Integrated with show is a lot of slapstick humour to keep the audience engaged. My daughter who apparently likes slapstick humour laughed (in one of those really loud laughs) at every pratfall.

And for us adults, you will thoroughly enjoy it.

Would I recommend it? A resounding, yes.

In fact, it is an event I am planning to a yearly family tradition, that's how engaged I was and trust me when it comes to family fare, there aren't that many shows that I am willing to sit through even if my daughter likes the show.

Fair warning, there is very little dialogue in the show as it is with all Cirque du Soleil show. If weren't for the lead character saying "where is the snow, I am looking for snow", you would not have an idea what was happening.

So if you have a chance to check out the show, Wintuk is offering a 30% discount for children's tickets.

Bathroom Tip: The intermission falls at the hour mark, so if you need to go to the bathroom, leave right before because the bathroom lines are horrible.
